Santander is the perfect city to visit for culture – it has amazing architecture and great food. The famous Palacio de la Magdalena lies at the mouth of the Bay of Santander. The cathedral has a wonderful octagonal cupola and Gothic cloister.
Santander has its fair share of great museums but 50 minutes drive from the house is Bilbao and the world famous contemporary Guggenheim Museum. Exhibitions feature permanent and visiting exhibits and is one of Spain’s largest museums.
One of the best golf courses in Spain is in Santander: Pedreña, this was Seve Ballesteros’ local club.
The variety of local beaches is great – from the huge, untouched stretches of golden sands and rugged surf to the more exclusive, tiny coves for those wanting more privacy.
Playa de Somo is definitely worth a visit – it is 5km in length with amazing views of Santander city and the Peninsula de la Magdalena. It is popular with Spanish families and is the best place for surfing. It has a surf school and lessons can be booked. The Puntal de Somo has lovely sand dunes and two excellent chinigintos on the beach serving excellent tapas, good and wine.
Playa de Sangre is bound by a sheer cliff wall – on top of which are miles of beautiful fields. It has two wild beaches thought to be the most beautiful in Cantabria.
There are many different activities locally including snorkelling, diving, sea fishing, tuna fishing, waterskiing, wake boarding, zip wiring, walking, horse riding, white water rafting, boat cruising, sailing, wind and kite surfing. The staff at the house can arrange everything.
In the winter months it is possible to organise skiing in Alto Campó and hunting nearby.
Cantabria has seven Spa towns where the famously rich mineral waters of the area are used to create pools and treatments. It is possible to book thermal and hydrotherapy baths in the nearby Spa towns as well as many other treatments.
We were welcomed with open arms by Aziz, and we were led up the drive through the rolling Cantabrian hills to what looked like a small house. How wrong we were!
This amazing, large property is much bigger than it appears from first view. Set in 80 acres of rolling estate near the sophisticated city of Santander, it has stunning views across the local countryside and down to the sea. The house faces west and enjoys mind blowing sunsets and the twinkling lights of Santander are so romantic at night. Town, country and beach, this house has the best of everything as the sea is an 8 minute drive from the house.
Divided between two properties, there are seven big bedrooms, five in the main house and apartment next door and another two in the boho guest house (which has its own sitting room and kitchen). The bedrooms are all unique, one with chinois wallpaper, another with a walk-in wardrobe and cosy fireplace. All are stunning and beautifully furnished and each has its own bathroom. Some of the bathrooms have free standing baths – one is a very groovy silver.
The bigger house has a huge galley-style kitchen, a home cinema and an enormous sitting/dining room with mezzanine floor. Upstairs you’ll find a funky children’s quarter – heavenly for the younger members of the party with a bedroom which can be made up into a dormitory to sleep 8. The children have their own separate bathroom and play/TV area.
One of the double bedrooms is housed in a delightful one-bedroom apartment (accessed from outside) with tiny kitchen. Perfect for grandparents who want their own privacy.
The lower ground floor is a huge space with a fully equipped ‘Technogym’ and spa as well as an indoor pool, jacuzzi and hammam. As if this wasn’t quite enough there is also a raised open fire pit and gentleman’s drinking area.
The rooms have been meticulously designed with no expense spared: fabulous collections of unusual artefacts, beautiful linens and fabrics adorn the beds, high quality wooden floors have bespoke rugs and the glorious furniture is colonial in style.
Enjoy poolside dining by the 20m heated swimming pool or eat by the house at a long table. The local chef can create delicious freshly-made local food to your spec. There are endless places to sit in the shade (or sun!) as well as a giant outdoor bath under the walnut tree, a well-stocked vegetable garden (for the use of guests) and an unusual converted greenhouse to read in during the colder months.
You can walk into the hills behind the house, the owner has an enormous amount of land and, if you can’t face the walk, a golf buggy. A drive to the nearest beaches is just over 5 minutes – there is surfing, swimming, riding and many other sports. Enjoy a lunch of fresh sardines by the sea and delicious white wine or nip into Santander for some culture.
