The magnificent scenery of the island can be best enjoyed on foot, and Kefalonia remains a popular destination for walking and hiking enthusiasts. Follow the tracks and ancient paths that crisscross the island, and discover the delights of Kefalonias’ wildlife and flora, as well as an insight into the history of the area.
As well as the many charming fishing villages, traditional hamlets, and a host of spectacular beaches to visit, other day trips on Kefalonia include the picturesque Fiskado, the harbour town of Sami (where the famous film ’Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ was filmed), the Caves at Melissani and Drogorati and the neighbouring island of Ithaka.
We arrived at Iris House on a beautiful September evening, just as the sun was setting. The owner showed us to a gem of a villa which has been lovingly restored by him and has resulted in a fabulous paradise close to the sea.
It sits on the edge of this huge historical estate and is built in the style of a Cephalonian manor house and with an imposing restored old olive mill nearby. There are breathtaking views of glorious countryside and the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea.
It is so lovely to visit a villa with such a glorious garden with so many flower filled corners to sit in.
The pool is set slightly below the main terrace and has Roman steps leading down into the water.
The villa is so elegantly furnished with exquisite antiques and beautiful objects collected by the owner’s family which gives it a sophisticated yet laid back and charming style. The food was utterly delicious, Yolande created a fabulous 3 course dinner, which started on the terrace with a cocktail and Cefalonian pistachios (apparently the best in Europe!). The highlights were the fabulous view, the food and the cocktail menu (which even showed you the recipes for drinks!). It is worth mentioning that, thanks to the wonderful chef, this house is a top culinary and wine tasting destination. This is the only house on the island with an in-house chef. The house is available for weddings in May, June and September. The reception and dinner can be dealt with by a fabulous local wedding planner for up to 70 people.
