La Foret is situated in the South West of France in the Armagnac region of the Midi-Pyrenees. The nearest village is Estang – less than 1 km away – you can walk or cycle down a quiet, country lane.
Bordeaux is 1.5 hrs drive to the North. Toulouse is a 1 hr 45 min drive to the East.
There are plenty of picturesque local towns within 20 minutes by car.
Fly from most regional airports to Bergerac, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Biarritz- all 1.5-2hrs drive away.
10 hr drive from the Eurotunnel at Folkstone.
Car hire is recommended.
A short walk down a winding country lane is the typical, rural village of Estang where you can pick up some delicious croissants for breakfast from the local bakery. The village also has a butchers, mini-supermarket and pharmacy. There is also a restaurant and cafe.
There is a large golf course within a 15 minute drive of La Foret.
There is a tennis court in Estang.
The capital of Armagnac, Eauze is a 15 minute drive away. Like most of the towns in this area it has a morning market every Thursday where the best of the local produce can be bought. Seasonal fruit and veg, fresh seafood and delicious cheeses – great for foodies looking for inspiration. The town is famous for the production of ‘eau de vie and local producers are well worth a visit. There are plenty of good cafes and restaurants in Eauze, the pizza is especially good!
The medieval town of Cazaubon is a 15 minute drive away and has no less than 7 historic churches to wander around. It also has the best local bakery and an Intermarche. Neighbouring Barbotan-les-Thermes, famous for the hot springs that flow underneath the town has a Thermal spa which offer pampering treatments.
Bastide d’Armagnac is an original medieval village with a beautiful, historic market square and at the end of October holds an annual fete to celebrate the production of Armagnac.
Eugenie-les-Bains, a 40 minute drive away, is home to a 3 star Michelin restaurant and cookery school run by Michel Guerard.
The world renowned jazz festival runs from the end of July till the middle of August and is only a 40 minute drive away.
For car enthusiasts the nearby town of Nogaro has a historic race track and the city of Pau (1hr drive) held the first race to be called a Grand Prix in 1901.
The imposing mountainous range of the Pyrenees can be found South of La Foret where it is possible to find diverse range of activities for the intrepid.
La foret is a delightful and beautiful 17th century Chartreuse located in the heart of Gascony. The house benefits from very large ceiling heights in the main reception rooms and bedrooms and encompasses timber and terracotta floors, numerous beams and a wonderful wooden veranda for outdoor dining. The house exudes comfort – you can really feel the history of the place.
This house would be perfect for families, the ground floor bedrooms are large with high ceilings, beautiful painted French furniture and a mixture of linen and velvet furnishings. The first floor bedrooms are great for children who all want to stay in the same room – the large single beds will sleep 2 small children per bed if they feel like cuddling up!
The downstairs living area is split into two rooms: the Grand Salon and the Petit Salon – both perfect for relaxing with a good book in the evenings and a roaring fire for the cooler months. The Petit Salon has a TV for watching DVDs and the space is big enough that you can keep away from quieter folk at the other end of the room. Makes it an ideal room for a large group.
There are plenty of areas for eating al fresco, two terraces and a beautiful wisteria-covered veranda looking out over the gardens, stunning during the day but equally beautiful at night – enjoy a twinkly candle-lit supper under the stars. Put your feet up and be fully catered for if you really want to relax – there’s a fabulous cook who can come for a single night or more (must be booked well in advance).
The ping pong table in the huge converted barn makes the perfect place for a game in the shade. The owner has also made sure there is a wide selection of outdoor games equipment available.
One of the greatest joys is being able to walk into Estang for fresh bread and pastries. We love the sound of this house and we think you will too!
