Corfu, famed for its glorious greenery and luscious interior, has become an immensely popular destination, much favoured by the cognoscenti who want to escape the contrived glamour and glitz of the med spots and enjoy the laid back understated greek life. This divine island offers stunning beaches, great night life, delectable restaurants and boat hopping between small and quaint tavernas meaning that even the most restless of pleasure seeker will be happy!
The north east coast is full of outstanding bays and white pebbled coves, higher up, away from the coast the interior is home to birds of prey, rare flora and rural simplicity.
Nearby St Stephano is a simple and pretty harbour with seafront tavernas and a delightful beach.
For the teenagers the night life in Kassiopi is a short drive up the coast. Kassiopi also has supermarkets, restaurants and bars.
There is boat hire in Kassiopi and a boat can be moored below the villa.
To the north of the villa there is an excellent fish taverna, Imerolia, and the long sandy beach of Apraos which has tavernas.
This is a fine place to spend a family holiday or with a close group of friends, take a small boat to a tiny taverna for a long, lazy lunch of fresh fish and come home to a delicious dinner under the stars. One of the greatest pleasures of this gorgeous stretch of aquamarine fringed coastline, with ancient olive trees sloping down almost to the waters edge is that the sea-fronted properties are so accessible by boat. You can spend your mornings stopping off to swim at one or other pebbly cove, admiring the views of mainland Albania before seeking out a new taverna for lunch. All the tavernas have their own wooden jetties and their owners will wave you in, catch your rope and tie up your boat before handing you their menu.Corfu town has a wonderful selection of shops and restaurants. It is possible to take a guided walk through the old town, stopping on the way for sustenance in any one of the many bars filled with people.
The island’s capital is a rambling and delightful mix of cultures, traditions and architecture. There is a French built promenade, cricket on the Esplanade and a venetian elegance that encompasses the town.
There can be few locations in the Ionian (or the Med for that matter) that equal that of Serenity, a long time favourite of the cognoscenti. This is a house that enjoys a superb position right on the sea. Private, serene, with a very special ambience of its own, it enjoys one of the most beautiful and secluded locations imaginable.
It boasts spectacular views across the Corfu Channel to the Albanian mountains and the Greek mainland beyond.
From its many terraces you can watch boat life pass by from local fisherman to the occasional super yacht. Relax at the stunning horizon pool or take the steps down to one of the two sunbathing areas by the sea. Here you will also find boat mooring and further steps into the water.
Serenitys’ separate living areas ensure maximum comfort and privacy. These consist of the main house, a delightful cottage next to the pool and two further bedroom suites. Combined with its many terraces and intimate sitting areas, guests can enjoy complete privacy from each other. There is always a quiet spot to read in the shade, sunbathe by the pool or enjoy cool breezes on the waters’ edge.
The horizon pool, with its amazing sea and mountain backdrop is a magnet. Swimming becomes an experience in itself as pool and sky merge with the blue sea beyond. Above the pool is the romantic “Moroccan area”, under the shade of an olive tree: comfy cushions and a dreamy view provide yet another area to escape to.
The mature garden is beautiful. Olive trees provide shade, masses of shrubs and flowering plants tumble down the dry stone walls. Dozens of terracotta pots overflowing with scented plants complete the scene.
The house is understated but with every possible comfort. It has a wonderful atmosphere with an eclectic mix of pictures and artefacts.
Its pretty bedrooms are cool and welcoming, and the long, shaded terrace, leading to a fabulous sitting out area (the “Belvedere”) combines to make a gathering point both day and night.
Serenity is a great venue for those who want a relaxed stay in the most idyllic surroundings imaginable – it’s a great place for entertaining. There are two dining areas, one leading from the kitchen with covered terrace, another near the pool, with barbeque. At night the fragrance from the scented garden, combined with flickering candles and a moonlit path on the sea is simply magical.
The house staff will unobtrusively ensure that their guests’ needs are attended to. For those with children, and especially for teenagers in July and August, the pretty harbour village of Kassiopi provides more than “safe” nightlife and bars, within an esy 15 minute walking distance home.
Serenity is very special, a unique bolt hole for those who appreciate a more than comfortable home from home in a location providing a true escape from the very different world they left behind. We recommend it highly.
