Southern Morocco’s most favoured coastal town – and the one most easily reached from Marrakech – offers both a contrast and an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Essaouira has managed to retain a laid-back timelessness rarely felt in the seething streets of Marrakech. It’s a relaxing place and a charming one too. Sandy colored ramparts shelter a clean and bright medina built around French piazzas, carved archways and whitewashed avenues and alleys.
Over the past decade, Essaouira has become known as a centre for arts, crafts and music, attracting visitors to it’s galleries and workshops and hosting an assortment of annual festivals. Apart from the well known Gnaoua World Music Festival in June, there is also a Flamenco Festival and Arabo-Andalucian music in the autumn and a classical music festival each spring.
The fishing port, overlooked by grand fortifications, provides a constant source of supplies for local restaurants, while the wide sandy beaches to the south have put Essaouira on the windsurfing map at certain times of the year when the winds are up.
Essaouira is the perfect destination for bohemian travellers, with its sandy beach and bustling medina streets filled with folk art and tribal pieces, those seeking a more laid back Moroccan experience will be captivated by its charm.
Villa Basmah is one of three privately owned villas at the edge of the grounds of Le Jardin des Douars hotel, so guests would be perfectly located to benefit from all the services offered by the hotel as much or as little as they want. Choose from gourmet restaurants, spa, leisure activities, a shuttle to the beach or Medina…
This is a charming, traditional Moroccan house. The lovely pool is big and surrounded by beautiful sun beds with comfy white cushions. The planting around the pool is full of colour – lots to look at when not caught up in your book! We love the extra little touches here like sunbeds supplied for every guest.
Inside the house you will find beautiful tiled floors and accents of warm Moroccan colours throughout, from the red and green silks in the sitting room to the bright yellows and blues in the bedrooms. Walls are burnished orange or gentle cream, all in all some wonderful colours remind you of the liveliness and vibrancy of this fabulous country.
With beautiful landscaped gardens, a large terrace and outside dining, and a vast open plan living area and two comfortable areas for seating, there is plenty of space for everyone here. Inside and out this house ticks all the boxes.
A cook will prepare breakfast, and other meals if required, using ingredients you have purchased while out exploring, or preparing menus you have pre-ordered, so you can truely relax while someone else spends time in the kitchen.
