Local Information

Southern Morocco’s most favoured coastal town – and the one most easily reached from Marrakech – offers both a contrast and an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Essaouira has managed to retain a laid-back timelessness rarely felt in the seething streets of Marrakech. It’s a relaxing place and a charming one too. Sandy colored ramparts shelter a clean and bright medina built around French piazzas, carved archways and whitewashed avenues and alleys.

Over the past decade, Essaouira has become known as a centre for arts, crafts and music, attracting visitors to it’s galleries and workshops and hosting an assortment of annual festivals. Apart from the well known Gnaoua World Music Festival in June, there is also a Flamenco Festival and Arabo-Andalucian music in the autumn and a classical music festival each spring.

The fishing port, overlooked by grand fortifications, provides a constant source of supplies for local restaurants, while the wide sandy beaches to the south have put Essaouira on the windsurfing map at certain times of the year when the winds are up.

Our View

Essaouira is a wonderful holiday destination for everyone but especially for those who love the bohemian life. With its crescent-shaped expanse of sandy beach and bustling streets filled, those seeking a more laid back Morocco will find this just the ticket.

And this house is the perfect place to rest your head after a heady day in the medina or at the beach. Villa Patio is one of three privately owned villas at the edge of the grounds of Le Jardin des Douars hotel. Those who want to be independent from the hotel can be but, if you want to dip in to any of the gourmet restaurants, use the spa facilities or join in any activities that is entirely possible.

This is a charming, traditional Moroccan house all on one level, with exposed wooden beams, tiled floors and accents of warm Moroccan colours throughout. The sitting room is bright and light with huge floor to ceiling arched doors which lead out onto the tiled terrace and swimming pool. The beautiful gardens are walled, there is a rolling lawn and clever planting ensuring year round colour.

Internally this is a stylish and cool property, gentle pink or blue walls sit alongside bright artworks and dramatic furnishing. The kitchen is very groovy with a central island with a beautiful huge light above it. Beautiful tiles abound both on the floor and wall, beds are made up with crisp linen and the local colour and flavour of Morocco is felt everywhere. There are lovely spots in the garden to sit in the shade and think or read (or sleep!) before leaping into the fresh pool. The proportions of the house are generous and yet the house is cosy and welcoming. The best of both worlds.

A cook will prepare breakfast, and other meals if required, using ingredients you have purchased while out exploring, or preparing menus you have pre-ordered, so you can truely relax while someone else spends time in the kitchen.
