Local Information

Casa Emilia is located at the foot of the Alpuan Alps, near the Versilian coast and only a short drive away from the charming city of Lucca. The centre of Lucca is based on the remains of an Roman amphitheatre of which the shape can be seen in the main piazza. The city walls are still intact today and offer a wonderful, circular walk. One of the most interesting buildings in Lucca is the historic Guinigi tower – a medieval tower 45 metres high with a garden of oak trees at the top. The city is the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini and there is a museum dedicated to him.
A little further away is the perfectly preserved medieval town of Barga, with its splendid Duomo on a mountain top, offering a fantastic view in every direction.
Also worth a visit the Bridge of Mary Magdalene in Borgo a Mozzano: a superb example of medieval architecture, still intact, and according to a legend, despite its name, was built by the Devil!
A 45 minute drive will take you to the beaches of Versilia, long sandy stretches with plenty of restaurants, umbrellas and loungers to rent. A small area of the beach is ‘free’ but most are ‘bagni’ with loungers and facilities that you rent for the day- perfect if you have small children.

Our View

A most beautiful house, carefully renovated and set in the exquisite Tuscan countryside, surrounded by sloping olive groves. The interiors are modern yet cosy with high wooden ceilings, traditional ‘cotto’ floors and linen upholstery. The bedrooms are bright and airy with deeply comfortable beds.
Downstairs, the kitchen, sitting room and dining room are all open plan separated only by a couple of steps. The kitchen has a central island unit – perfect for cooking and chatting. Also on the ground floor is the single bedroom – reached via a set of steps from the sitting area. Double doors on both sides of the kitchen lead out towards the pool and garden on one side of the house and on the other there is a sweet kitchen garden with covered dining area and an ancient oak tree.
At the front of the house, near the former entrance gate, are low, comfortable cushioned chairs and a big parasol. Or, there are sun loungers by the pool looking out to the wooded hills beyond. The main garden has sloping lawns with a set of steps down to the pool area. The garden is verdant and lush with a variety of palm trees, bamboo, cypress and olive trees all offering welcome shade.
