Within 30 minutes on foot you can reach the charming village of San Pellegrino. Join the nonnas at the local bar and sit in the sun with a cappuccino- it’s a great place for people watching. The town of Gualdo Tadino is only ten minutes by car and has plenty of restaurants, bars and all the necessary shops along with a museum dedicated to the reknowned production of ceramics. It also has a couple of supermarkets on the outskirts for stocking up.
Gubbio is also close by and not to be missed- this medieval town is awe-inspiring, with steep streets winding up the mountainside. The main Chiesa, San Francesco has some impressive 15th century frescoes. The Roman Ampitheatre in the town park is also worth a visit. Every street corner has it’s own restaurant serving delicious local food.
The area is well known for its wine production – visit Orvieto or Montepulciano to sample wine and eat delicious local delicacies.
Lake Trasimeno is 1 hour away by car, where Umbria spills over into Tuscany. Around this 128 sq km lake, olive groves, vines, woods of oak and cypress and sunflower fields frame castle topped medieval towns, such as Castiglione del Lago and Passignano. You can swim from the lakeside beach at Castiglione del Lago.
Perugia and Assisi are also very close by and great to explore.
If the outdoors is more your thing, the regional park of Monte Cucco has plenty to offer. Hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, canyoning and hand gliding are all possible.
This house has the perfect combination of Roman owners and a Milanese architect making it very cool. The interiors are a calming combination of billowing linen drapes, intricate Spanish tiles, and designer furniture. The two separate suites away from the main house mean it would be perfect for two families sharing.
We were so impressed by the huge kitchen, it’s kitted out with stylish crockery, high spec gadgets and a traditional open fire – great for foodies wanting to cook up something delicious with their local market finds. If cooking isn’t your thing and you’d rather leave it to someone else, the housekeeper is a wonderful cook and can be booked on request. The big doors leading onto the courtyard are perfect place for gathering everyone together for a lazy supper under the stars.
Inside the large living and dining area is cool and calm during the height of summer but would be equally cosy out of season. We loved sinking into the huge linen covered sofas, and imagined ourselves here in October half term with a glass of Vin Santo and a roaring fire.
Upstairs, all of the bedrooms are beautifully designed- clean & fresh with 100% linen sheets and draping curtains and oh so comfy! The bathrooms are sleek, trendy and immaculate and the master bedroom is one of dreams- roll top bath – check, fireplace – check, en suite bathroom – check, fabulous view – check. If you have an interest in interior design this is the house for you.
Outside the gardens are gently sloping and surrounded by oak trees. You could feel completely away from it all here but it’s still possible to walk to the local bar and there are plenty of shops and restaurants within 10 minutes by car. Days would be spent lazing by the pool re-connecting with friends and family, exploring all of the wonderful towns and cities nearby and indulging in some of the best cuisine in the world!
