Kefalonia, the rugged, romantic island of Captain Corelli‘s Mandolin, is one of Greece’s best kept secrets. Despite being the largest of the seven Ionian islands, it is underpopulated and remains largely unspoilt. The island is famous for its dramatic landscapes and delicious food, enchanting villages, scenic beaches, white dazzling sand and clear waters.
There are many fabulous beaches to explore, to name a few; Jerusalem beach (walking distance from the house) is a wide and gently-sloping beach with views to the surrounding bays and has a family-run taverna, for a refreshing drink or ice cream. Alaties beach on the north west tip is a semi-sandy cove with a beach bar/Italian restaurant, great for sunset cocktails. Myrtos beach is the most famous beach on the island, renowned for its exotic natural beauty, crystal waters, white sand and steep cliffs.
A short drive south you will find Assos, one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages on the island, a tranquil Venetian village with an impressive Venetian fortress. Amble along the small and winding streets, enjoy lunch in one of the waterside tavernas, and wander up the long paved path to explore the fortress grounds above, taking in the magnificent views on the way.
Fiscardo is a colourful and vibrant port on the eastern coast, 15 minutes drive from the house. The port promenade is brimming with fine restaurants and tavernas to satisfy everyone’s palate, cafes and shops, housed in renovated Venetian style mansions. By night, Fiscardo takes on an entirely different perspective, considered to be the most cosmopolitan spot in the Ionian Sea, the charming waterfront is lit up and bustling.
Traditional Kefalonian fishing boats moor alongside the more extravagant temporary visitors during the summer. If you are early enough you can buy freshly caught fish. Otherwise a stroll around the harbour will take you on a tour of some of the most luxurious yachts, attracted to Kefalonia by the tranquility of Fiscardo.
This house is just incredible – we arrived and our breath was taken away by the most serene and uninterrupted view of the Ionian Sea.
The property is spacious and luxurious, with huge rooms and open plan living areas. The accommodation is spread across two buildings, which are both very well catered with fully equipped large open plan kitchens, each with its own shaded outdoor terrace. The interiors are elegant and neutral, with hints of colour and there are high wooden ceilings with exposed beams throughout. Bedrooms are all large, light and bright, each with access to a private balcony or to the vast terrace surrounding the house.
It is just a ten minute walk down to the nearest beach, perfect for a swim before breakfast, or head to the restaurant where they serve the best gin cocktails, the perfect aperitif! Then make your way back to the large outdoor seating area next to the pool, the best place to enjoy a dramatic, panoramic sunset.
For the more active there is a well equipped gym which has been thoughtfully designed so you can enjoy the most incredible view, which should take your mind off the job in hand.
For families coming together, this villa really would be an excellent choice.
