The Caribbean needs no introductions, its crystal waters and fine, white sandy beaches are second to none- and Antigua certainly lives up to the romantic expectation. The island is low key, informal and very much old Caribbean. Restaurants and bars are all open shacks and the dress code is flip flops and floaty dresses. No over the top glitz here.
Within a few minutes drive of the house are a plethora of restaurants including the renowned Catherine’s Café.
English Harbour boasts a rich colourful history as the former headquarters of the British Royal Navy’s Caribbean Fleet. Its centrepiece is historic Nelson’s Dockyard, named after Admiral Nelson who lived here from 1784 to 1787. It is the only original working Georgian dockyard in the world and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2016.
The natural harbours at English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour and the pervasive trade winds have made them the sailing hub of the Caribbean with some of the world’s most prestigious regattas taking place including-
Antigua Charter Yacht Show in early December
Superyacht Challenge late January / early February
RORC Caribbean 600 in February
Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta in April
Antigua Sailing Week late April to early May
The Talisker Atlantic Challenge finishes in January/February in Nelsons Dockyard.
Walks from Windward Landing to English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour provide breathtaking views of Montserrat, Redonda, the Pillars of Hercules and historic naval forts including One Gun Battery, Fort Cuyler and Middle Ground.
Sailing lessons, horse riding and paddle board hire can be found at Antigua Yacht Club in Falmouth Harbour.
Yoga, meditation and various exercise classes can be found in English Harbour.
Leave the gloomy skies of Northern Europe in winter and escape to this wonderfully welcoming seafront house in the area known locally as Turtle Bay (a turtle hatching ground).
The master bedroom is hugely impressive, with a vaulted wooden ceiling, polished wooden floor and antique furniture. Double aspect views, framed by French doors on one side, open to the private terrace with mesmerising views of the open ocean.
We envisage everyone gathering in the spacious veranda, it has masses of comfortable seating and dining space for 14 but for those looking for a little quiet time there is a cosy TV room and separate office/media room with projector.
Outside, the garden cottage is perfect for guests, grandparents, a nanny or simply extra accommodation for large groups.
The large tropical gardens are filled with banana, coconut, mango, papaya, hibiscus, and almond trees. Majestic palm trees offer cooling shade around the pool. Within the gardens, a level lawn area is perfect for games of cricket or football.
Our final tip – if you’re up early enough don’t miss the sunrise!
