Local Information

Corfu has to be seen from the sea to be truly appreciated. Take a boat to find the more secluded coves on the north east coast that you can only get to by boat. Enjoy the beautiful beaches or snorkeling in one of the many bays before a sun downer at one of the lovely tavernas nearby. Boat home again and dine on your villa terrace in the silky night air.

The highlight of lunch at a beach side taverna is seeking out a new one every day, pulling up in your little boat to one of the many jetties where the owner (or a waiter) will wave you in, catch your rope and tie up your boat before handing you their menu and leading you to a table. There are many to choose from; The Wave Bar, Pagopotion, Kaparelli and Eucalyptus all in San Stephano , Agni Taverna, Toulas, Nikolas Taverna, The White House in Kalami, Glyfa in Kamanaki, Kerasia fish restaurant, as well as many restaurants in Kassiopi harbour.

Kalami, just a few minues walk from the house, is a pretty little bay with a collection of houses and restaurants. It’s also possible to enjoy water sports here, including water-skiing, wake boarding and ringos – the village was made famous by the Durrell brothers who both wrote books when they stayed at The White House here. The White House is still owned and run by the family who rented it to the great writer Lawrence Durrell and his wife Nancy before WW2. ‘Larry’ later painted the story of the house and charm of Corfu in his famed account ‘Prospero’s Cell’. The family have now created a modern Greek restaurant with luxurious cocktail area for guests to laze in the garden under the shade of the olive trees, gazing at the boats in the bay and the Albanian coastline.

San Stefano harbour, with its popular collection of restaurants mentioned above, is only a few minutes away by boat.

Agni is another lovely little village within walking distance. In Greek Agni means unspoilt which describes this bay perfectly! It may be small offering only three tavernas and a few other buildings but is a beautiful place to catch some sun and a dip in the clear waters. You are able to hire boats from Agni.

The island has a rich history and plays an important role in Greece’s ancient history. Visit cosmopolitan Corfu town, shop in its narrow streets and enjoy a drink on the ‘Liston’. Alternatively visit its various museums (Archaeological & Byzantine) and palaces. Visit the Byzantine castle of Angelokastro for a spot of history and drama – imaginative children love it.

The tavernas are of a great standard and you will receive a warm welcome, whether visiting for breakfast, lunch or dinner – or just coffee or drinks. Lovely to sit by the sea at night in one of the many tavernas we are happy to recommend.

Our View

What a hidden gem this is! Just a few minutes walk from Kalami or Agni, you will find this spectacular beach fronted property in Yialiskari Bay, a beautiful, secluded shingle beach. You can access the house by car, but the beach is only accessible by boat or footpath. The path from the house leads down from the pool area, through the garden.

The interiors feature high wooden ceilings with exposed beams and are neutral and bright, with thoughtful hints of colour to set off the beautiful stone finish. Bedrooms are light and spacious, bathrooms are designed using natural stone and showers with pebbled floors and fluffy towels as standard.

There is an olive grove behind the house and landscaped gardens that offer a variety of seating areas, terraces and hammocks. There is also a beautiful sundowner terrace on a level, lower than the pool, to enjoy the last rays of sunshine and view across the bay towards Agni.

There is a jetty just below the house and sea is crystal clear, perfect for swimming, snorkeling using the house kit or venturing out on the paddle boards. If you are lucky you will spot one of the resident kingfishers or herons.

This is a very special place to hide and unwind.
