Local Information

The nearest village is San Casciano dei Bagni, a fascinating Etruscan settlement. The cluster of traditional buildings sits on top of the hill, surrounded by beautiful countryside. Traditional bars, restaurants and sweet little shops line the streets but the village is most famous for it’s thermal baths. Visit the Fonteverde spa for a thoroughly relaxing outing.

The interesting town of Citta della Pieve is only 25 minutes drive away from the Castello. Famous for being the birthplace of 2 of Italy’s greatest Renaissance artists (Perugino being the more famous of the 2) – works by both artists can be found in St Maria and St Antonio churches. The town is small and has most of its medieval town wall intact. It boasts an 11th century tower and an impressive medieval castle. The labyrithine alleys date back to medieval times and the picturesque nooks and corners, steeped in memories and emotions are still full of life today. Enjoy the Nonna sitting outside her small house playing top trumps with her grandson or make the most of the beautiful girls who arrive on their Piaggios to have a latte mid morning in one of the many cafes.

The area is well known for its wine production – visit Orvieto or Montepulciano to sample wine and eat delicious local delicacies.

Lake Trasimeno, where Umbria spills over into Tuscany is Italy’s fourth largest lake and a prime spot if you want to tiptoe off the well trodden trail and slip into the slow rhythm of lake life. Around this 128 sq km lake, olive groves, vines, woods of oak and cypress and sunflower fields frame castle topped medieval towns, such as Castiglione del Lago and Passignano. You can swim from the lakeside beach at Castiglione del Lago and beach and water sports are available there.

Our View

A completely unique opportunity to rent an idyllic, hilltop hamlet in the romantic Tuscan countryside. The hamlet consists of five beautifully renovated houses and two one-bedroom apartments, dotted with antique furniture and decorated by world-class designers David Mlinaric and Hugh Henry. Lime washed walls, terracotta floors and beautiful fabrics, comfy sofas and magnificent fireplaces- this is old world Italy. Within the hamlet, a Michelin starred restaurant partnered with chef Heinz Beck offers the opportunity to ditch the cooking the hassle of meal arrangements for large groups on holiday.
The houses are all very private but within a stone’s throw of each other, with winding lanes bordered by fragrant gardens and ancient trees.

NB: The owners use the actual castello which is not included in the rental.
The restaurant within the grounds of the hamlet is open to the general public.
