Carcassonne is 35 minutes by car, a walled city with a Saturday market
Lagrasse is 20 minutes by car, and has a small market
Narbonne is a 50 minute drive, and has an enormous covered market open everyday
Canal du Midi is 1hr away by car
Leucate and La Franqui (both sandy beaches) are 45 minutes by car, and also have great windsurfing and kite surfing
Fly to Carcassonne airport from London and many regional airports including Liverpool, Nottingham and Edinburgh.
The house is an easy 25 minute drive from Carcassonne airport.
Also fly to Toulouse, Montpelier, Beziers, Perpignan and Gerona – all within 1 1/4 hours drive.
Just behind the house you can walk up onto the Montagne Alaric which is the tallest in the area and offers stunning views to the Minervois and Pyrenees. It lies in an area of outstanding beauty, dotted with quaint villages that hold numerous fetes and other activities during the summer months, as well as regular markets.
The hillsides are covered with easy trails from which to enjoy the splendid scenery and explore the ancient ruins that dot the area. There are a number of waterfalls and swimming lakes.
Use the 2 house bikes to discover the wonderful local mountain biking.
There are some fantastic equestrian hacks on the doorstep. Horses can be arranged in advance.
The annual Carcassonne summer festival is now established as one of the premier events in southern France. In the summer months music festivals are prolific and the Ceret Museum of Modern Art exhibits the works of Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, Miro and many others.
There are excellent local wines. with a wide choice of restaurants in the area addressing every level of sophistication.

Acrobranche/ziplining is an amazing but slightly scary sport which can be experienced in a number of nearby locations.
It’s difficult to know where to start with this paradise as we were properly blown away – and that’s saying something!
Arriving at this lovely property we were struck by the quiet in the surrounding valley. Set above a tiny winding road which leads into a nearby gorge the house sits proud with lovely views.
With its glorious setting and spectacular views the English owners of this palatial house have thought of everything to ensure your comfort and relaxation is complete.
The house has been transformed from an ancient wine barn on 120 acres of one of the most beautiful valleys in the French Languedoc.
The interiors (designed by Sam Todd-Hunter) are regularly shown on the cover of magazines, they are stylish and well thought out. Each bedroom is a different colour with sumptuous furnishings & high quality sheets and towels.
The huge swimming pool offers fantastic views across the valley to the mountains beyond. The garden has been beautifully designed with some great planting.There are several house bicycles and helmets (more can be hired) as well as ping pong, tennis and table football. It is a paradise for children and adults and all immaculately kept up by the very gracious Mike and Geraldine.
The house runs like clockwork and has every single modern update you could desire. There are cocktails on offer at the bright blue bar (verrrrry James Bond) and even a whole room dedicated to games. Nobody is going to be bored at this house, we just love it!
