Local Information

Salento is in the ‘heel of the Italian boot’. A sun-kissed territory all year around, it is a treasure trove of unique art, exquisite Mediterranean cuisine and genuine hospitality. The area here is very unspoiled, authentic and friendly. Small shops sell ‘Nonna’s’ homemade pasta and regional delights, whilst the charming, family-run restaurants use home-grown vegetables and ‘just off the boat’ seafood.

The coastline of Puglia is arguably the best in all of Italy, lined with sandy beaches, azure seas and well equipped with delicious seafood restaurants and other facilities, it’s perfect for families.

Castro is the nearest seafront town, with it’s historic 16thC castle telling stories of the splendour of the past. The charming streets are lined with shops, bars and restaurants. Boat hire can be found here, or for those who prefer a skipper, take a tour and dip in and out of the majestic caves along the coat of Salento.

The beautiful baroque city of Lecce, often called the Florence of the South due to it’s spectacular architecture, is less than half an hour away. Culture vultures won’t want to miss the Basilica di Santa Croce and Roman Amphitheatre along with some wonderful piazzas- the city also has a vibrant, authentic nightlife. It is wonderful for picking up treasures of local art, pottery and antiques to take home.

The owner of Masseria Jade is a wine-specialist and can advise on the best vineyards to visit.

Our View

Masseria Jade or ‘House of Jade’ reflects the surrounding colors of the land as well as the owner’s Chinese roots. Set in 2 hectares of olive groves and constructed from local stone, the main house and separate annexe surround a central outdoor living area and garden. The covered dining area with pizza oven and BBQ is perfect for late suppers once the heat has gone from the day. For star-gazers the illuminated roof terrace has magical views over the surrounding countryside and is the perfect place to retreat to after a day exploring.
Inside, the rooms are simply and comfortably furnished with high quality linens and towels. We particularly loved the master bedroom in the separate annexe. A beautiful tapestry hangs behind the master bed, softly draped in muslin, with a generous en suite bathroom.
This is a wonderful house to explore the fabulous food and culture of this fascinating part of Italy.
