Sleeps 12 (plus 2 children)

We had the most wonderful week at North Farm. The house is completely stunning and the countryside is exactly what we needed to blow away the cobwebs. The children enjoyed day trips to the nearby castles and we had some delicious suppers at the local pub. We hope to return very soon.

Local Information

North Farm is a wonderful base for exploring the Durham and Yorkshire Dales. The area has great walks, cosy pubs and numerous places of interest.
Within 10 minutes on foot you can reach an ice cream parlour selling delicious ice creams made with milk from their jersey herd. A 25 minute walk in the opposite direction will take you to the nearest farm shop.

Five minutes away by car, the small Roman village of Piercebridge on the River Tees has another excellent farm shop and equally good gastropub, the Fox Hole. More serious foodies can sample the region’s only two-starred Michelin restaurant, the Raby Hunt which is also 5 minutes away by car.

Nearby are the pretty market towns of Barnard Castle (with its famous Bowes Museum) and Richmond, the medieval city of Durham, with one of the finest cathedrals in Europe, as well as Raby Castle, the newly renovated Auckland Castle, and the spectacular High Force waterfall.

The Lake District is easily reachable for a days’ outing, as is the seaside resort of Saltburn which is popular for surfing and blowy walks along the clifftop Cleveland Way.

There are several great wild swimming spots on the River Tees, between 10 and 20 minutes away by car.

The country-house hotel Headlam Hall, has a spa, golf course and tennis court and is only 10 minutes by car.

Our View

Such unique houses as this are very few and far between so we are extremely pleased to be able claim this beautifully refurbished farmhouse as part of our portfolio. The rambling, “mostly Victorian” golden stone structure is surrounded by rolling pastures and has been in the owner’s family for generations. Rita Konig has designed the iconic interiors with a wonderful array of modern and traditional prints, matching the classic Enlgish farmhouse feel with lashings of colour.

Three of the bedrooms could be classed as ‘master bedrooms’ so a couple of families with grandparents holidaying together would be very comfortable. Downstairs, the collection of sitting rooms each exquisitely decorated would be exactly the place for cosying up with friends or family. The bedrooms are as to be expected- the highest quality sheets and layers of thick blankets and eiderdowns. The bathrooms deliver gallons of hot water and seriously powerful showers, which is a good thing because after bracing the great outdoors on the many surrounding footpaths that’s exactly what we would recommend.

The house is next to a working farm which adds to the rural charm of the property and provides a layer of entertainment for little ones who can watch the farmer check on his cattle once a day.
