Local Information

Scott Williams’ home town of Bruton has fast become the coolest destination in the South West. Always a mecca for artists and creatives, gallerists Hauser and Wirth added the final polish when they opened a fabulous contemporary art gallery on the site of a disused 17th century farm (20 minutes on foot).
Bruton high street is home to a plethora of fascinating independent shops and restaurants and a beautiful river walk takes you on a circuit of the historic town and outlying countryside.
Nearby, The Newt in Somerset is definitely worth a visit- a fabulous walled garden specialising in unusually trained apple trees, working cider press, glasshouse, farm shop (but not as you know it), bakery and restaurant.
Babington House is a short drive away.
For children there is the Mill on the Brue outdoor activity centre, archery, rafting, canoeing and abseiling are just are few of the activities on offer.
The Stourhead estate- filming location for ‘Pride and Predjudice’ is a short drive away – the famous lake and grounds are not to be missed in autumn when the landscape is ablaze with colour.

Our View

Number One is an elegant Georgian townhouse, medieval forge and row of cottages set around a pretty private courtyard. At the heart of the project is a devotion to Somerset’s craft heritage, artistry and culture.
The rich palette of colours used in the main house, wooden panelling, aged elm flooring and lavish furnishings recall Georgian glory days. The house has beautiful architectural features; muralled, curved walls with curlicue stairs that wind up to the eaves rooms; the bannister and its leaf-motif decoration forged within the forge at the back of the property.
The workshop history of the cottages is reflected in exposed beams, warm oaks and quarry-tiled floors. Robust finishes are softened by jute and wool rugs and heavily patterned Morris textiles which evoke the arts and crafts movement and a return to nature.
The beds are made up with Egyptian cotton sheets, goose-down duvets and embroidered bedspreads; the bathrooms are stocked with towelling bathrobes and bespoke, handmade, essential-oil based organic toiletries from local heroes Great Elm Physick Garden.
This is the perfect place from which to explore the beautiful county of Somerset. A true retreat from city life.
