The village of Elounda is in the picturesque Mirabello Bay. Once a charming fishing village, it’s now a bustling hub with much to offer. Being neither too busy nor too isolated, Elounda has a glorious coastline with startlingly clear waters. Dotted along the Golf of Mirabello, from the town of Agios Nikolaos and further East, there are several stunning beaches, many under 10km from the villa, so you really are spoilt for choice! Visit the nearby island of Spinalonga (a 10 minute drive from the villa to the village of Plaka, and a further 10 minutes by boat) Plaka itself is a beautiful seafront town, with much to see and great tavernas.
You’ve also got to see the neighbouring Kolokythia island – accessible via a bridge from the mainland. It’s a beautifully unspoilt and virgin island.
Slightly further afield, Agios Nikolaos is perched on a hill overlooking Mirabello Bay, and is a larger town with a small-town feel. There’s a strong sense of character and heritage here, and plenty to keep everyone entertained. There’s some great shopping to be had, with shops selling a variety of chinaware, clothes, fabrics and local food products and delicacies. Geographically, a narrow channel separates the town’s pretty harbour from the nearby Lake – Voulimeni, and the banks of the lake are pedestrianised and bustling with cafes and restaurants. In the evenings there’s a real buzz about the place, as the harbour-side bars fill with stylish young twenty-somethings looking for the gentle nightlife Ag Nik has to offer. There are many great eateries in Agios Nikolaos; head to one of the restaurants over-looking the lake, and for a local flair try one of the fabulous waterfront tavernas..
For those of you seeking a fully authentic Mediterranean experience, the surrounding mountain villages are a real must-see. They are scattered around and may are within easy driving distance of Orion House. There is spectacular food to be had here (and incredibly well-priced too!), in many instances grown in the back gardens of the eatery’s owners. There are authentic tavernas and bars, cafes and chapels to visit, and they offer such a wonderful insight into the Mediterranean of old, perfectly unspoilt and authentic.
Golfers rejoice, as there is a top 18-hole golf course an easy drive away, and several smaller courses closer to home. There’s tennis courts available for use by villa guests at the neighbouring 5 star hotel, as well as spas, beaches, restaurants and tavernas that you are welcome to use too. Nothing is too much trouble here, and everything from horse-riding to personal training can be arranged for you at your request.
Set on a gentle hillside, overlooking the sea, Saskia House has stunning views of magnificent sunrises and sunsets, against the backdrop of the glorious Cretan landscape.
You approach the villa on a stone-paved road, over a charming little bridge into the entry courtyard, shaded by olive trees and coloured with flowers.
With an incredible 1.37 hectares of professionally landscaped grounds, there’s garden pavilions, broad terraces and plenty of outdoor seating from which to take full advantage of the wonderful views. The infinity edged pool feels as though it stretches out right in to the Mediterranean sea..
Inside, large open-plan living areas with high ceilings and impressive furnishings provide the perfect place for large groups to gather together of an evening before an alfresco supper under the stars. A fully-equipped kitchen (either for the budding chefs amongst you, or for your own private chef they can arrange for you if required) opens onto an outdoor pergola dining area and wide patio. There’s a real sense of one continuous space at this villa, with outdoor and indoor merging to become one, as dining rooms lead out to the pool area and terraces, providing plenty of space for the whole group to find an area for themselves in which to relax. There’s exposed stone walls, gorgeous natural hardwood flooring in the bedrooms, marble and stone floors elsewhere, wonderfully framed vistas through perfectly positioned windows and winding stone pathways to help navigate your way through the extensive grounds.
For children, the playground is to die for – fabricated using the finest timber from Finland, and less than a 5 minute walk from the villa, and within the villa’s grounds. They are accessed via beautiful, specially designed pathways through olive trees and local vegetation. The playground features a mobile seahorse, balance beam, swings, climbing frame, timber Wendy house and abacus, plenty to keep the children fully entertained for hours on end. Fear not parents, as the designers haven’t left you out – there are comfortable shaded areas from which to keep an eye on the play whilst also being able to enjoy yourselves too!
Please note – this playground is also used by one other neighbouring villa Orion House, but no noise can be heard back at either house.
For super-large groups, Orion House is situated just 180m door to door from Saskia House. They each have total privacy due to their orientation and expert landscaping, but still maintain easy access between them.
