A glorious Greek island in the Ionian Sea – just south of Corfu, Paxos is one of a kind. The crystal clear water of this island and all the Ionian islands has to be witnessed first hand. It is possible to charter a yacht or motor boat to lunch on Anti Paxos (2km) or just to explore the hidden beauty in every bay, drop the anchor and swim through the mysterious caves that dot the coastline. The local restaurants are of a very high standard serving both traditional Greek food and the most delicious Italian cuisine. Eating out on Paxos is a pleasure.
White pebble bays on the east coast and majestic white cliffs and deep caves on the west give families a range of things to explore. For the “intrepid” there are walks through flower filled olive groves, gentle fishing, snorkelling and diving.
This has always been one of our favourite spots and we have known this lovely house for the last ten years – originally a smaller house with no pool, this house has developed over the years into a wonderful holiday home which has been totally modernised and now has a beautiful swimming pool with amazing views.
The villa is right on the sea in the olive groves just along from Loggos, the English owners have created a magical oasis of calm. The villa is surrounded by terraces overlooking the island of St Nicholas to the South, more terracing looking North over Marmari beach and across the sea to Corfu from the sheltered pool terrace, shaded by brightly coloured plumbago and bougainvillea. At the bottom of the garden down a pathway you will find a beach which is as private as they ever get in Greece, just a 2 minute walk down from the house.
The house is L shaped – with bedrooms in both wings, the main area also houses the kitchen and sitting room and has two bedrooms upstairs with a shared downstairs bathroom which has been beautifully restored with a huge bath. The other wing has the master double bedroom and a further two bedrooms (one twin and one studio double). All the bedrooms have air conditioning and all look at the sea.
This special location allows one to follow the slow progress of local fishing boats and the arrival of yachts from other Ionian islands. By night there is a theatre of twinkling lights from the mountain villages on the mainland.
There aren’t many places in the world where you can collect your shopping by canoe but this is possible when you stay at Spiantzi. Depending on the wind direction you can be in the village of Loggos within 10 minutes (use one of the house kayaks). A swim before breakfast is definitely a must, a few steps from the house and you are on the beach. Kipos, Kipiadi and Mamari beaches are all within walking distance- all lovely Paxos beaches within easy reach and this is an area of Paxos where dolphins are often spotted.
This is without question the best place to snorkel on the island with an incredible amount of colourful fish to gaze at just in the bay below.
