Local Information

Having been shut off from foreign visitors for the majority of the twentieth century, Vis has retained a wonderfully authentic Dalmatian island feel. You’d be forgiven for thinking you were in Greece, so much so that the island was chosen to be home to Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again, and for good reason – quiet island life, friendly locals, deliciously fresh food and buzzy little bars. Vis is as much of a must see as the film.
Crystal clear, glistening waters lap gently against the shore, and there are ample spots for swimming directly off the water-side paths straight in to the warm seas. The two main areas of Vis on its North East coast are Vis Town and Kut. Vis Town is the busier of the two, with many bars and restaurants, the main marina, a sweet chapel, the main ferry port and plenty to see and do both day and night.

Kut is a short walk further East, following the ambling coastal path, and is also home to some wonderful eateries that are within easy strolling distance of some of our villas. Keep following this path and you’ll reach Grandovac beach – a glorious pebble beach with its own outdoor bar and dancefloor during the summer months, great for teenagers who want to escape in the evenings whilst the adults needn’t fear they’ve gone to far afield!
On the West coast is Komiza, a ‘friendly’ rival to Vis Town, known for its slightly bohemian feel and proud fishing heritage. There a delightful little beaches scattered around, and from the harbour you can catch a boat to the neighbouring island of Bisevo to visit the beautiful Blue Caves.

You simply must explore the area by boat once here – it would be crazy not to! We took a boat over to the nearby island of Budikovac, where the island’s single inhabitant (rumour has it he was banished from Vis many years before, though he seemed friendly enough to us!) prepares the most incredible fresh dishes at his menu-less restaurant – your skipper will drop anchor just offshore, and a charming rowing boat will come across to meet you and take you safely ashore. This Crusoe-esque set up is quite simply wonderful and should definitely feature on your holiday itinerary; the fish is so incredibly fresh and the flavours divine.. the whole experience alone is not to be missed.

Our View

Situated in the very heart of Kut, The Garden House is a delight to behold as you enter off the cobbled pathway outside.

The house has been lovingly restored to such a high standard – linens and fabrics in beautiful neutral tones accented with delicious dusky blues and burnt oranges. Upon entering, a small flight of stairs leads you up to the main living areas, a fully-equipped kitchen-come-dining area that’s perfectly lit by the light streaming through the double doors that lead outside.

The patio garden is full of fruit-laden citrus trees, with an abundance of colour and lovingly maintained. Town life inevitably means neighbours, but the walls surrounding the garden means you’re perfectly secluded, and can thoroughly relax and take pleasure in your surroundings over a crisp gin and tonic (with slices of lemon fresh from the trees!) under the dappled evening sunlight, before a short walk round to one of many fabulous restaurants within easy strolling distance.
Should you wish to continue enjoying the gardens and the sense of quiet they bring, dine outside under the stars right at home..

The bedrooms are all finished to an immaculate standard, with sumptuous linens and furnishings, you’ll be hard pushed to choose a room for yourself with each one as lovely as the other. The soft white drapes over the windows provide the most gorgeous light quality in the bedrooms – instantly calming and soothing, and the views themselves overlooking the quiet cobbled side street on one side are simply perfect for quiet reflection over your morning coffee, and the occasional people watching as locals sometimes wander past with their fresh loaves of a morning..

With so much within easy walking distance, and the sea right on your doorstep, The Garden House is the perfect spot from which to explore the island in wonderful comfort.
