The house is in North East Corfu, just above San Stefano and near the small village of Sinies
Sinies is 1km away, and has a well-stocked supermarket
San Stefano is a 5 minute drive or 10 minute downhill walk (longer back up)
Kassiopi is 5km or 10 minutes away by boat
Fly to Corfu from all London and most regional airports.
The Orange Tree is a 1 hour drive from the airport (40 km).
A hire car is recommended – the house is on an unmade road so a 4×4 is recommended outside of July and August.
Corfu has to be seen to be believed – clear-water coves, drifts of spring flowers and scents of herbs, wild orchids, tortoises, Venetian belfries, winding village streets, donkeys laden with kindling, imposing country manor houses in lush olive groves, tiny chapels with a solitary candle burning inside – all this is here. Alongside are cosmopolitan classical concerts, opera and theatre, chic and sophisticated shops, sports facilities of every kind, superb swimming, and endless wining and dining destinations from the simplest to fairly expensive.
Nearby San Stefanos is a simple and pretty harbour with seafront tavernas and a delightful beach. The tavernas are lively, day and night and there is also a cocktail bar if the mood takes you.
For the teenagers the night life in Kassiopi is a short drive up the coast, approximately 5 kilometers away. Kassiopi has a beautifully picturesque harbour, wide choice of tavernas, shops, restaurants, bars and a pharmacy.
This is a fine place to spend a family holiday or with a close group of friends, potter into town for delicious local delicacies, take a small boat from to a tiny taverna for a long, lazy lunch of fresh fish and come home to a delicious dinner under the stars.
One of the greatest pleasures of this gorgeous, wooded stretch of coast is that the sea-fronted properties are so accessible by boat. You can spend your mornings stopping off to swim at one or other pebbly cove, admiring the views of mainland Albania before seeking out a new taverna for lunch. Most of the tavernas have their own wooden jetties and their owners will wave you in, catch your rope and tie you off before handing you their menu.
Down an unmade road above the delightful fishing village of San Stefano we found this beautiful house.
Orange Tree is very much a house for outside living. A large property with fabulous outside space and three buildings all located around a central outdoor kitchen and sitting room.
We entered the house on a brilliantly sunny morning through a cool hallway and down some stone steps to the outside kitchen and sitting room where comfy chairs with bright Mexican cushions welcomed us. The huge covered courtyard dining area with outdoor kitchen is perfect for foodies, where we could imagine our guests cooking up a storm. The indoor kitchen is wonderfully retro with top of the range equipment and lovely tiles on the walls. Bright paintings have been hung on every wall.
The master bedroom is in the entrance building, accessed via an outdoor staircase. There are three bedrooms together, just off the outdoor sitting room and the final, bright bunk room is in a third building, along with the indoor kitchen and sitting room – a great bedroom for slightly older, independent children or teens.
Large colonial ceiling fans keep the bedrooms cool (there is also air con). Each bedroom has been beautifully decorated using different bright colours, cool pinks and greens, bright purple, red or blue. Even the keys to the bedroom door have a feather key ring in a bright colour. The bathroom furniture is wooden and has also been painted in a punchy hue. The bedrooms all have terraces with tables and chairs for that little bit of extra peace.
The pool terrace was alive with plants, comfortable pale blue sun loungers and towels. Agapanthus and cyclamen bobbed heads along side bougainvillea and jasmine, a heavenly combination. Views down to the sea and across to the Albanian coast completely took our breath away.
You couldn’t fail to have a wonderful time at this house. It would be a joyful place to spend a week or two.
