Vigla is set in a totally private estate in the northwest of Meganisi, just west of Spilia harbour and the village of Spartochori.
You will find shops, tavernas and a butcher in Spartochori, just a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk from the villa. The nearest beach is just below Spartachori at the end of Porto Spilia. Please note the walk is down hill so will take longer on the uphill return.
The capital of Meganisi is Vathi, with it’s beautiful horseshoe shape port and delightful tavernas, cafe’s and bakeries
Fly to Preveza airport. Take a taxi from the airport to the small port of Perigali (a 45 minute drive). Then boat transfer from Perigali to the port of Spilia on Meganissi (20 minutes). The live in staff will meet guests at Porto Spilia and arrange a taxi to the villa.
Alternatively, guests can fly to Preveza, hire a car and drive to Nidri in Lefkada (45 minutes) before taking the car ferry across (25 minutes).
For guests wanting to transfer from Paxos, either fly from Corfu to Preveza then follow directions above or take a sea taxi from Paxos to Parga, then a 1.5hr taxi journey to Perigali. Then the boat transfer from Perigali to Spilia.
*All transfers are payable locally.
Meganisi is the lesser known jewel in the crown of the Ionian. Seen from above, the pine forests and olive groves carpet the island in deepest emerald green. Around the North of the island hundreds of rocky coves, secret inlets and pebbly beaches hug the meandering coastline. The lack of sandy beaches keeps the water unbelievably clear and deters the crowds of mainland tourism. Further examples of how unspoiled the island is can be found in the charming harbour villages; Vathy and Spilia. Here you can find brightly coloured fishing boats and family-run tavernas lining the waterside offering a delicious selection of local seafood. By day the atmosphere here is sleepy and quiet- by night there is a relaxed, romantic buzz.
The long ‘stem’ in the South of the island is famous for its fascinating sea caves. The most intriguing (and Insta-worthy) of which is Papanikolis, said to have sheltered a WW2 submarine of the same name. This mammoth cave even has it’s very own minute sandy beach at the far end.
For those in search of adventure, the neighbouring islands of Ithaca and Kefalonia are within easy reach for exploring on your hire boat.
Meticulously designed by the owners to work in harmony with it’s unique surroundings, Vigla Estate is a precious haven. Sitting atop gentle slopes and enveloped by organically farmed olive groves from which the estate produces it’s own olive oil, there is a huge feeling of peace here. From the house the views stretch out over Meganisi channel towards Ithaca and further into the distance Kefalonia and the mountain range of the mainland can be seen. Looking out across the water here, one could imagine the views unchanged since the times of Greek mythology.
Inside, the rooms are dotted with beautiful and unique pieces of furniture, carefully sourced. The bedrooms are generous in size and elegantly furnished with attractive textiles. The carved wooden headboard in one bedroom is a charming inclusion. The bathrooms have lovely creative touches; pebble mosaics on the floor, roughly hewn stone window sills and white washed walls.
The pool is set into the hillside below the house and is enclosed on one side by a shaded portico and stone wall with comfortable seating area- the entrance to the pool area can be locked which is great for families with small children. The pool area is generously equipped with plenty of sunbeds and hugely comfy daybeds- we loved that there were so many areas in this house to relax.
