The train station at Orvieto is ideal for direct journeys to Rome, Florence, Arezzo and Perugia.
The glow of the small city of Orvieto is beautiful from every angle. With architecture reminiscent of both Florence and Rome, the exquisite cathedral façade reflects the golden light of sunset like few others in the world. There are lots of shops and bars/restaurants, fabulous delis and wonderful bakeries. Well worth a visit.
Just east of Orvieto and only 35km from the villa you’ll find Todi. Perched on a lofty hilltop, high above the winding River Tiber, Todi’s tumbling traditional architecture makes it one of Umbria’s prettiest towns. Once a simple agricultural town, today’s gentrified Todi is a trendy retreat for foreign expats and Rome’s arts and media types. At its heart, the lovely Piazza del Popolo has plenty of good cafés and restaurants, plus you can climb the tower of San Fortunato church for fabulous views. Once you arrive, bypass the city gates and use the well signposted Porta Orvietana car park instead. Rather than having to climb the seriously steep hill into the centre, you will instead be able to ride up in style via the (free) lift.
In Deruta you will find the famous, traditional ceramics known as Maiolica (also found in other local towns) – true devotees of this china seek out Deruta where 250 factories still produce this colourful ceramic. From huge outdoor pots to tiny hand painted espresso cups – your suitcases will be bulging.
Surrounded by the owners’ fascinating truffle farm within the rolling Umbrian hills.
The light-filled sitting and dining area or ‘Garden Room’ is hugely impressive. Beautifully cool in summer thanks to the air conditioning and cosy in winter with the sound of rain against the glass, this is the perfect place to experience all the Umbrian seasons. The magnificent oak tree outside seems to guard the house and provides verdant shade during the summer.
Upstairs, four spacious bedrooms take up the upper two floors of the original building, with the living space stretching out across the extended ground floor. The bedrooms are generous and welcoming with king size beds, modern Italian furniture and a warm decorating palette. Each room is individual but treated with the same care. The master bedroom has an outdoor terrace looking out over the garden.
A lovingly tended vegetable garden at the rear provides guests with seasonal produce to use.
This is a beautifully designed house, with a keen sense of welcome. The owners are keen to share this wonderful place so that others can experience the beauty both inside and out.
