Local Information

Istria is a sight to behold. The stunning views are a feast for the eyes, from distant mountains, valleys, olive groves and vineyards to the vast forests and wheat fields.
Its rural parts are as glorious as its coastline. The area is rich in culture and history with museums and galleries to explore. There are several historic sites including a Roman amphitheatre in Pula, and the stunning Euphrasian Basilica in Porec.

Istria is renowned for its delectable truffles and truffle-hunting tours can be easily arranged. For the wine-lover Istria has many local vineyards which offer excellent tastings, including the award winning Bienvenuti in the town of Kaldir. The culinary delights do not stop here – the area is home to some fabulous olive groves, producing some truly delicious oils.

The unmissable Motovun Film Festival is in the last week of July. The main square of the hilltop town is transformed into an outdoor theatre, and screenings take place throughout the day and into the evenings.
Somewhat surprisingly, the coast is just a short drive away – perfect for a wander around the seaside towns, perhaps stopping at one of the many brilliant fish restaurants serving the freshest of fish straight the boats you see arriving in the harbours.

For the more active and adventurous, there are wonderful walks, perfect for experiencing first hand the glorious Tuscan-esque scenery. Mountain bikes can be hired if you prefer to take in the views at a faster pace, and horse riding too.

The delights of the area are to be found all year round, with the official truffle season from September to January, and daily local markets in Rovinj and Porec while winter guests can enjoy the amazing Christmas markets in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Our View

The location of this villa really is perfect for exploring the many delights that Istria has to share. You’re within easy walking distance of both an incredible restaurant and one of the area’s best wineries – perfect for experiencing the culinary delights of this region literally right on your doorstep. Momjan itself has everything you need from a local village, with a shop stocking the basics, beautiful walks and a couple of bars perfect for an evening aperitif.

If you’re more of a home bird, the villa itself is simply stunning. The interiors are to die for, with neutral walls and floors punctuated by the rich red, auburn, mustard and teal tones of the fabrics and furnishings. Everything here is of the highest quality, sourced specifically for the space and curated in such a way as to give it an effortlessly luxurious feel.

The open plan layout of the main living space is just perfect for large groups. There’s an incredibly well-equipped kitchen, ample spots for everyone to sit and relax, and access out on to the garden terrace and pool beyond. There is even a summer kitchen, so you can prepare and serve delicious BBQ lunches with ease, and enjoy them all together at the shaded outdoor dining table. The swimming pool is a generous 36 square meters, and complete with pool toys, table tennis and badminton, children, teens (or adults!) can be kept entertained for hours on end whilst those wanting to switch off and unwind can while away the afternoon from the comfort of a sun lounger. The pool and gardens benefit from sunshine all day long, and with ample shaded seating spots dotted around you can dip in and out as you please.

Back indoors, the bedrooms are spacious and filled with soft natural light, the bathrooms and dressing areas are perfect for a spot of pampering after a day spent in the sun. With the bedrooms split over two floors, there’s then a large Moroccan style roof terrace with ample seating for all – the ideal space to come together and enjoy views across to both Venice and the Italian mountains on a clear day.

On the basement level, there’s a hidden haven. For the young ones, there’s table tennis, darts, games, a large TV with home cinema set up, and for the adults, a full scale bar and wine cellar, with breakfast-bar seating and and uber cool feel. For anyone a little more health-conscious looking to keep up good habits whilst on holiday, there’s a fully-equipped gym, with rubber flooring and mirrored walls, before sweating it out again in the cedar wood sauna.

If you’re thinking of heading out for the day, try your hand at the water sports on offer in nearby Umag, hunt for your very own truffles in the forests around Motovun, take guided tours of the three local wineries, sample the growing trend for agro-tourism in the area and eat as authentic as it comes, hire bicycles and explore the beautiful Tuscan-esque landscape. There really is a wealth of experiences to be had in Istria, and we really couldn’t think of a better villa to come home to at the end of each day…
