Istria is a heart-shaped peninsula very near the Italian border.
The Prascari Estate is in the north of the peninsular and a little inland
The nearest local restaurant is a 5 minute drive
Motovun is a 20 minute drive from the villa
Porec 30 minutes drive and Novigrad 35 minutes
Pula in the south of the peninsula is 50 minutes by car
Fly to Pula airport (40 minutes drive)
Fly to Trieste airport (1 hr 35 minutes)
Ljubljana airport in Slovenia is 2 hrs from the villa (good for low season bookings)
It is also possible to fly to Venice and drive to the villa, around 2 hrs 50 minutes, or arrive by boat, 1 hr 45 minutes
Note: during high season July/August, do try and fly directly into Croatia as opposed to Venice or Slovenia, only there can be long traffic jams at the borders during summer months
Car hire highly recommended
The house is on the beautiful and private Prascari Estate in Istria. This charming, authentic hamlet features beautifully restored houses surrounded by lush greenery and amazing views. The estate is surrounded by fields, olive groves, vineyards and truffle forests and the are native Boskarin cattle grazing nearby (you can hear their cow bells gently ringing as you approach). Villa Catalpa can be rented in conjunction with Villa Moro, to sleep a total of 16 people. Alternatively, all 4 villas on the Prascari Estate can be rented together for much larger groups.
Istria is a sight to behold. The stunning views are a feast for the eyes, from distant mountains, valleys, olive groves and vineyards to the vast forests and wheat fields.
Its rural parts are as glorious as its coastline. The area is rich in culture and history with museums and galleries to explore. There are several historic sites including a Roman amphitheatre in Pula, and the stunning Euphrasian Basilica in Porec.
Istria is renowned for its delectable truffles and truffle-hunting tours can be easily arranged. For the wine-lover Istria has many local vineyards which offer excellent tastings, including the award winning Bienvenuti in the town of Kaldir. The culinary delights do not stop here – the area is home to some fabulous olive groves, producing some truly delicious oils.
The unmissable Motovun Film Festival is in the last week of July. The main square of the hilltop town is transformed into an outdoor theatre, and screenings take place throughout the day and into the evenings.
Somewhat surprisingly, the coast is just 20 minutes away – perfect for a wander around the seaside towns, perhaps stopping at one of the many brilliant fish restaurants serving the freshest of fish straight the boats you see arriving in the harbours. For those who fancy a dip even closer to home, there is the Mirna River.
For the more active and adventurous, there are wonderful walks, perfect for experiencing first hand the glorious Tuscan-esque scenery. Mountain bikes can be hired if you prefer to take in the views at a faster pace, and horse riding too.
The delights of the area are to be found all year round, with the official truffle season from September to January, and daily local markets in Rovinj and Porec while winter guests can enjoy the amazing Christmas markets in Ljubljana, Slovenia
Catalpa is one of those houses you will be delighted to spend time in! It is an elegant conversion of a large, old building nestling in a lovely old Croatian estate.
Views from upstairs of the gardens and countryside beyond are fabulous.
With six bedrooms spread across three living areas this house would be ideal for a large group. The two separate living areas (an apartment and a studio) are independent with their own small kitchens. Come together at meal times and share the elegant space – the main kitchen is state of the art with chrome fittings and a big island.
Floors are wooden and stone – walls have an accent colour behind some of the beds – others are white and elegant. There are lovely linens used in the bed covers
The stunning pool house next to the big swimming pool has beautiful, dark wooden beams, a hand carved table and elegant furniture. It’s also possible to heat the pool (ask us as there is an additional charge) so this house works brilliantly at Easter and in the Autumn too. We can also arrange a cook so put your feet up and really enjoy your holiday!
