Local Information

Istria is a sight to behold. The stunning views are a feast for the eyes, from distant mountains, valleys, olive groves and vineyards to the vast forests and wheat fields.

Green Istria, the interior, is as glorious as its coastline. The peninsula as a whole is rich in culture and history with ancient ruins dating back to the bronze age, medieval hilltop towns, museums and galleries to explore. There are many historic sites including a Roman amphitheatre in Pula, and the stunning Euphrasian Basilica in Porec.

Istria is renowned for its delectable truffles and truffle-hunting tours can be easily arranged. For the wine-lover Istria has many local vineyards which offer excellent tastings, including the award winning Clai Winery, a mere 5 minute walk from the villa. The culinary delights do not stop here – Istria has been voted the top olive oil producing region in the world for the last 4 years (2015 – 2018) and the area is home to some fabulous olive groves, producing some truly delicious oils.

The culinary scene is impressive. For those looking for a fine dining experience there are 4 JRE (Jeunes Restaurateurs d’Europe) designated restaurants within a 30 minute drive from the villa, in addition to numerous high quality traditional “konobas” serving terrific local cuisine from the freshest ingredients sourced from both land and sea.

The unmissable Motovun Film Festival is in the last week of July. The main square of the hilltop town is transformed into an outdoor theatre, and screenings take place throughout the day and into the evenings. The charming, neighbouring, hilltop artist colony of Groznjan holds a Jazz festival every July and sports enthusiasts can enjoy ATP tennis in nearby Umag.

Somewhat surprisingly, the coast is just 20 minutes away – perfect for a wander around the seaside towns and fishing villages, perhaps stopping at one of the many brilliant fish restaurants serving the freshest of fish straight off the boats you see arriving in the harbours.

For the more active and adventurous, there are wonderful walks, perfect for experiencing first hand the glorious Tuscan-esque scenery. Mountain bikes can be hired if you prefer to take in the views at a faster pace, and horse riding too.

The delights of the area are to be found all year round, with the official white truffle season running from September to December, numerous gourmet festivals in every season and daily local markets in Rovinj and Porec. Winter guests can enjoy the amazing Christmas markets in Zagreb, or head a little further afield to Ljubljana in Slovenia.

Our View

Villa Frantoio is in a truly stunning location, surrounded by rolling hills, olive groves and vineyards. From the spacious terrace you look out over beautiful panoramic views of the Tuscan-esque landscape, and on the far horizon you can make out the glistening Adriatic sea.

Inside, this villa is finished to an impeccably high standard. The kitchen is immaculate, with a perfect, neutral colour scheme and the finest quality glass and tableware. The open-plan living area is the perfect hub for the group or family to get together; there’s plenty of space in the comfortable sitting room with French windows that flood the space with natural light. These windows open out on to the spacious terrace and pool area, with covered living and dining areas and a BBQ grill, perfect for long, lazy lunches in the shade after a morning spent poolside.

For those wanting to truly unwind, the outdoor terrace is perfect for sunset yoga, and the villa even has its own Finnish sauna. Dinner can be prepared onsite by a local chef, and the region is extremely rich in gourmet delights; the villa sits right in the heart of the region’s wine and olive oil roads, and overlooks the forests famous for their precious black and white truffles.

The gardens and grounds of this villa blend seamlessly with the verdant surrounding landscape, and are home to cherry and fig trees, as well as its very own young olive grove. Lavender and rosemary bushes gently scent the pool area, making this the perfect base for your very own Istrian adventure.
